Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha hi low.
