Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and because you have many players trying for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
