Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, and several battling for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
