Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an amazing range of wagering options and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with several trying for the low.
