Omaha Hi-Low: General Summary
January 24th, 2025 by Leilani

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, along with many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
