Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
October 5th, 2021 by Leilani

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players can get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an exciting array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
