Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline
February 12th, 2016 by Leilani

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants can get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, and many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
